So what is a good U-value (what should I be aiming for)?

If your objective is a comfortable home that has manageable heating requirements, your aim should be exceed the requirements of L1B and keep your U-values as low as reasonably possible (the figures below should realistically be considered max values):

External walls: 0.18
Roofs: 0.12
Floors: 0.18
Windows: 1.2 (whole window value including the frame not just the glass)
